At just 9 years old, Miles Fetherston-Resch is making serious waves towards ocean conservation. After watching hours of Shark Week and noticing how the beautiful Floridian beaches were becoming riddled with trash, Miles knew he had to do something. After chatting with his parents, Miles figured out the best way for him to support ocean conservation efforts over an extended period of time was through merchandise. By selling shirts, hats, stickers, and reusable straws, Miles is able to donate the proceeds he generates to various organizations that help protect our high seas. To date, Miles has donated over $23,000.

Q: What has been the most interesting or memorable thing to happen to you since you launched Kids Saving Oceans?

A: I was at an event and met local children’s book author, Tori McGee. I asked her if she wanted to write a book with me and she said yes! It is called Kids Saving Oceans: Olivia Makes a Difference. It’s about how you are never too young to make a difference and how all of our individual actions can add up to something big. This is one of my favorite things I have done because the books are used in classrooms across the USA and help remind kids that we can make a difference, regardless of age. I have also received emails about how inspirational the book has been for kids and I will always remember that.

Q: Who or what drives you to continue doing what you're doing?

A: I believe a polluted, empty, lifeless ocean shouldn’t be my generations inheritance. Without our oceans, life on earth would disappear. I want to be able to take my kids to see thriving and healthy oceans. So we have to start doing this work NOW!

Q: What are your hopes and dreams for your generation and our planet?

A: My hopes and dreams for the planet are that we treat it as an actual priority and not an afterthought. If we all work together, we can make our planet healthy again. I hope our planet will have plastic-free oceans, clean beaches, and thriving marine life. I also hope my generation remembers that we have power – in our ideas, in our voices and in our actions.

Q: What advice would you give to your fellow Generation Do'ers and aspiring young entrepreneurs?

A: My advice is whatever you are passionate about, just do it! Ask lots of questions. Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it's the right way. Just because we are young, doesn’t mean our voices don’t matter. Always speak up for what you think is right.

Q: What's next for Kids Saving Oceans?

A: I am working on adding new designs, new products, and maybe even a second book to the lineup. I also want to partner with other brands and collaborate as much as possible. I continue to organize beach cleanups, speak to other kids and businesses about how we can make a difference and want to continue to meet with politicians to talk about what they can do to support our planet’s health.

Q: When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?

A: I love to ride my bike, play with my friends and spend time with family. I also love reading. I just got a new kitten and he is so fun to play with too! I also like going to the beach and playing basketball.
